Complications

We have tickets, we have a date of departure (March 14th) and we are frantically trying to get everything done before we leave! I am of the firm opinion that no matter how early you start getting ready to go to the other side of the world (in either direction) you will still be rushing to get done in the end. However, a week and a half before we have to leave we have 2 suitcases packed already!

This post is basically a plea for prayer while we’re getting ready to leave. It never ceases to amaze me all the imaginative ways our lives get interrupted by chaos. Currently, the well water at the place where we’re living has been muddy, and getting worse, ever since Lance’s trip to Thailand. It used to be only every few days, but now it’s muddy every day until it clears up around evening. We lost the water in the kitchen from the pipes clogging, and then the water started not clearing up at all, necessitating showers and laundry being done at someone else’s house last week. Thankfully we’re traveling this week saying good-bye to grandparents and family while the owners try to fix the problem. It would be awesome to be able to shower and do laundry at the house the last week we’re there, so please pray the problem is solved when we return.

Another twist, late last week we received an email letting us know one flight on our itinerary was cancelled and they had rescheduled us for the next flight adding a 24 hour layover in S. Korea and arriving a day later. Because of people’s current reticence to fly, our airline started cancelling flights every other day and ours was one of the casualties. We can’t arrive a day later because we have reservations for a week, before we get into our house, that will be cancelled and not refunded, along with numerous meetings scheduled for the day after we arrive to register with the government etc. Lance called and switched our flight to the day before, thus giving us one less day to pack (trying not to panic here) but getting us there before we start to have all sorts of problems. Inconvenient and frustrating, but not a tragedy. Unfortunately, two days ago Lance received another email stating that our flight was still for a day later rather than when we need it to be. Multiple calls to the company that booked our flight haven’t resolved anything yet except a note on our file saying it’s important we get the earlier flight. They told us to call back in 48 hours for an update as they can’t reach our airline by phone either, since every company is having the same problem.

So, actually, while March 14 was originally our leaving date, now its our approximately-around March 14th leaving date. Please, please, pray this gets resolved without us losing a lot of money because we get to Thailand a day too late.

Thanks for your prayers. We’ll keep you updated as things develop.

Update

Well, we just figured out that all flights out of S. Korea have been cancelled for the foreseeable future. Since the airlines we booked with only goes through S. Korea to get to Thailand, we now have no tickets. The only reason we know this now is because Lance has been working all morning to find out any information about the flights and realized from Korean Air’s website that, starting tomorrow, Thailand won’t be letting any flights in coming from S. Korea. When he called to see what our options were from our booking company, they didn’t even have that information yet but, after awhile on hold, confirmed that was the case. Thankfully, our money will be reimbursed… seven weeks from now.

So, since our Thailand visas expire if we don’t arrive within one month, and we have other meetings and reservations made that won’t be reimbursed if we don’t show up, we are now looking up alternate routes and flight options in an effort to keep our original plans. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. Thanks!

Update 2.0

Next plan. We were able to book another flight with a different route by another airline going through Qatar instead of S. Korea. Surprisingly the price was actually cheaper even though we’re booking international flights less than a week away. Or maybe not surprisingly given the current situation. Unfortunately, we are now leaving 2 days earlier (still trying not to panic here) so we’re cutting our visit with family short to try and have everything ready to leave on time. Our new leaving date is now March 12th and we’re praying it will stay that way. Please continue to pray that we’re ready when we need to be and that everything will go smoothly from here.

Water Update:

Our water is mostly clear! While we were gone saying good-bye to family, the house owner had the well dug deeper and cleared of the silt. Now the water is clear 95% of the time and when it is muddy, it’s not nearly as bad as before. It is such a huge blessing to have clear water and to be able to wash clothes, dishes, hands etc. at the house, without feeling like they won’t be clean afterwards anyway. Thanks for your prayers!
